Biography
The daughter of the writer, journalist and artist Juan Bonet (1917-1991), sister of the singer Joan Ramon Bonet. She studied ceramics at the school of arts and crafts, but in the end she devoted herself to the song. She arrived in Barcelona in 1967 and began to sing in the ensemble Els Setze Jutges (Sixteen judges), participated in the anti-French patriotic movement for the use of the Catalan language “New Song” (Nova Cançó).
She published records with folklore songs in Catalan (one of her records received the status of the “ Golden Disc ” in 1971 - more than 100,000 copies were sold) and organized concerts of folk Catalan music in different parts of the world, while actively studying new forms of art.
For her third album, Maria del Mar Bonet wrote songs on the verses of Catalan poets, wrote it in close collaboration with the famous Madrid cantor Ilario Camacho. The cover for the disc was painted by Joan Miro . In 1993, she created an album dedicated to the work of Mikis Theodorakis (poems were translated into Catalan).
In 2007 she was awarded the Medal of Glory of the Parliament of Catalonia in recognition of her work in the ensemble Els Setze Jutges. The singer herself, in the same year, having released the album, dedicated it to like-minded people and associates of that time. Maria del Mar Bonet collaborates in performances, concerts and studio recordings of musicians of various styles and trends. In total, the singer recorded 30 discs. She was awarded more than 30 prizes and medals, including the Charles Cross Cross Academy Prize for the best foreign disc recorded in France (1984), and in the same year she was awarded the Cross of Saint Jordi - the highest award of Catalonia for outstanding services in the field of culture, as well as the national music award from the Generalitat of Catalonia for the popularization of Catalan folk music (1992).
