Biography
The son of the Swedish statesman Gustav Moritz Armfelt and Countess Gedwigi Delagardi . He spent his early childhood with his parents in Kaluga. After receiving a thorough home education, he entered the Uppsala Academy for 14 years, where he attended lectures throughout 1808 and 1809, then spent a year at the University of Edinburgh .
In 1811, in view of the accession of Finland to the Russian Empire, his father switched from Swedish service to Russian. Alexander also came to Finland. After graduating from a science course at a university in the city of Abo and having successfully passed an exam at the law faculty, Armfelt, on June 16, 1814, was assigned to serve in the Abo court court; he did not stay here for long, he entered the military service, from which he retired in 1827 with the rank of captain of the guard.
In 1831 he was appointed director of the Bank of Finland, and a year later - the official of special assignments under the then state secretary of Finland, Count Rebinder . He did not stay in this position for long, as he was soon appointed a fellow Secretary of State, and on March 17, 1841, upon the death of Count Rebinder, Secretary of State of the Grand Duchy of Finland. He held this position even longer than his predecessor - for 33 years, until the end of his life.
Although Armfelt was equated with other ministers by status, by his own admission, during the reign of Nicholas I his real influence was small [1] . During the reign of Alexander II, he successfully lobbied at the court of St. Petersburg the interests of the Finnish landowners. In 1857, he convinced the emperor to restore the Committee under the Finnish State Secretariat [2] , which allowed him to weaken the influence of Governor General Berg on the administration of Finland.
During the minority period of Nikolai Alexandrovich, Count Armfelt acted as Chancellor of Alexander University. In 1856, he was promoted to acting Privy Councilor and appointed member of the Council of State .
