History
The tournament was established in 2004 and was timed to coincide with the first victory of the local Edsbyun in the national championship after a long break [1] . The tournament itself was the first to be held indoors - in the newly built Dina Arena [2] . Then the Champions Cup gathered eight strongest clubs (six Swedish and two Russian). The following year, the number of participants increased to the twelve traditional teams (eight from Sweden and four from Russia). At the preliminary stage, they are divided into two subgroups, based on the results of matches in which butt games for final places are held.
Often, the Russian champion club did not participate in the tournament ( Vodnik in 2005 , Moscow Dynamo in 2007 and 2009 ), in these cases the vacant vacancy was filled by other Swedish clubs, or, as it was in 2005, Finnish ToPV .
The championship cup is considered a potential competitor of the World Cup [2] , which also precedes the start of the hockey season. This is facilitated by the fact that the matches of the Champions Cup are held in a closed arena, not subject to the vagaries of the weather. Another advantage is the classic format of matches 2 times for 45 minutes and a measured calendar (unlike the World Cup marathon with its shortened 2x30 regulations). The disadvantages of the tournament include the remoteness of Edsbyon and the lack of the necessary infrastructure to receive a large number of tourists, as well as the timing of the tournament, which takes place in the third week of September, when the teams are essentially preparing for the season.
Interesting Facts
The Edsbyun champion cup is often called the Champions Cup in the Russian media.
However, the tournament in Edsbün has nothing to do with the European Cup , which was played from 1974 to 2009.
The European Hockey Federation Cup has always been an official tournament of the International Ice Hockey Federation, while the tournament in Edsbün only in some years had the status of the official tournament of the International Ice Hockey Federation, which was subsequently deprived of it (so in the seasons 2014/2015 and 2015 / 2016 tournament in Edsbyun was not included in the official calendar of the International Ice Hockey Federation).
By and large, the organizers of the tournament in Edsbyun beat the name of the tournament in English: “Champions Cup” - “Champion Cup” and “Champions` Cup” - “Champions Cup”. And if at the first tournaments on the official logos an apostrophe was indicated in the name of the tournament, then the apostrophe was subsequently omitted.
In 2016, due to the refusal of Russian clubs, only Swedish clubs from the Helsingland region will take part in the tournament ( Bollenes GIF , Bruberg , Edsbyun IF and Yusdal BC ) [3] .
