History
In 2008, singer and musician Steve Marriner began performing weekly performances on stage at Irene's Ottawa Pub. The main instrument of Marriner was a mouth organ , and he invited himself to help experienced guitarist Tony Diteodoro, better known in the blues-rock environment as Tony D, and drummer Matt Sobb. With both of these musicians, he was familiar for many years, and the trio quickly played. Diteodoro proposed the name MonkeyJunk for the new team, taken from the line of Sona House :
I'm talkin 'bout the blues. I ain't talkin 'bout monkey junk. [one] |
Both Diteodoro, who was approaching the age of 50, and the younger Sobbe, and even Marriner, who was not yet thirty, were considered strong blues performers, so great hopes were associated with their joint band. Speaking at a couple of local festivals and having toured the seaside provinces , they then won the city blues competition and were sent to Memphis at the International Blues Challenge. There they took the third place out of hundreds of applicants from all over the world [1] .
Upon returning to Ottawa, the band recorded their first album, Tiger In Your Tank , which included both cover versions of classic hits and their own new works, also in the style of classic boogie-woogie . Over the next few years, they win over a dozen national Maple Blues Awards, enter into a contract with Canadian major blues label Stony Plain Records and release their second CD, To Behold .
The new album was already almost completely independent and contained nine original compositions and only one cover version - You're Going to Change (Or I'm Going to Leave) by Hank Williams . As Allmusic columnist Rick Anderson writes, in this album, the band continues the search for a synthesis between svomp-boogie , funk , rhythm-and-blues , country , delta-blues and Chicago blues . Despite the absence of a bass player , the group successfully creates a rich and “mundane” sound. Particularly noted is the new arrangement of the classic composition of Williams, which in the new version has acquired the sharpness and power, more characteristic of the Tom Waits delta blues [2] .
To Behold won the Maple Blues Award in the “record of the year” category [1] , and then “ Juneau ” for the best blues album of the year. After that, the group went on a two-week tour of France and took part in a number of jazz, blues and folk music festivals in Canada and the USA [3] .
