Biography

Grigory G. Shumeyko was born on December 12, 1923 into a peasant family in the city of Sterlitamak of the Sterlitamak canton of the Autonomous Soviet Bashkir Socialist Republic of the RSFSR , now the city of republican significance of the Republic of Bashkortostan .

He lived in the village of Kuban, Gulkevichsky district of the Krasnodar Territory , where he graduated from eight classes of high school. .

In October 1941 he was drafted into the ranks of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In the battles of World War II from November 1942. In 1944 he graduated from the Stalingrad Military Tank School .

Since 1944, a member of the CPSU (b), in 1952 the party was renamed the CPSU .

Platoon commander of the 50th Guards Tank Brigade of the 9th Guards Tank Corps of the 2nd Guards Tank Army of the 1st Belorussian Front , Lieutenant Guard. He distinguished himself during the liberation of Poland. On January 18, 1945, in the vicinity of the city of Plock, at the head of a group of five tanks, G. G. Shumeyko was sent behind enemy lines for reconnaissance and capture of crossings over the Vistula River. Caught in a fire bag, the tankers took up a circular defense and shot three enemy anti-tank batteries in a two-day battle, after which they left the damaged vehicles and left the encirclement. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 27, 1945, for the exemplary performance of command assignments and for the courage and heroism shown in battles with the Nazi invaders of the guard, Lieutenant Shumeyko Grigory Grigoryevich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal.

After the war, G. G. Shumeyko continued his service in the Soviet Army. In 1945 he graduated from the Leningrad Higher Officer Armored School , in 1966 - from the MV Frunze Military Academy . Colonel G. Shumeyko was the head of the department and faculty of the Kiev Higher Tank Engineering School .

Grigory G. Shumeyko died on May 1, 1977 . He was buried in Kiev , at the Lukyanovsky military cemetery .
