Biography
Between 1252 and 1260, Georg von Eichstatt served as commander of Sigulda Castle ( Zegevold ). In 1260, after the death of Livonian master Burkhard von Hornhausen in a battle with the Lithuanians at Durbe, Georg von Eichstatt was elected new landmaster of the Teutonic Order in Livonia .
After the defeat at Durbe, the Curonians and the Zemgals , joining the Lithuanians, by the autumn of 1260 expelled the Livonian crusaders from Southern Courland and Zemgale . Under the control of the Order remained Northern Kurland, where the Order castles of Goldingen , Vindava and Dondangen were located. But the rebels captured the castles of Georgenburg and Doblen. The Livonian Order decided to recapture the captured locks and return the fallen possessions.
Livonian Magister Georg von Eichstatt gathered an army to invade Courland. At that time, an uprising of the Estonians also broke out on the island of Ezel , which began to destroy the Germans. Magister Georg von Eichstaett sent an order of the army to Courland, while he himself, along with small forces and auxiliary detachments of Livs , Latvians and Estonians, set out to march on the island of Esel . At the end of the winter of 1260, the master of the ice passed through the strait separating the island of Ezel from the mainland. The Crusaders entered the island, where they began to mercilessly burn villages and kill local residents. At the beginning of 1261 in the Battle of Carmel, the rebels suffered a complete defeat and entered into peace negotiations. Livonian Magister Georg von Eichstaett signed a peace treaty, under the terms of which the Ezelians recognized the supreme power of the Order.
Meanwhile, the main forces of the Livonian crusaders marched on Courland and marched on Goldingen. On the way, they again captured the Sinelis castle, recently captured by the Lithuanians. All along the way, the Livonian crusaders cruelly avenged the locals, all the children over the age of 11 were killed, and the women were captured. At the beginning of 1261 the Livonian knights besieged the fortress of Gazenpot , which soon surrendered. The Crusaders took the children of the Gazpropo elders as hostages and returned to Riga , where Magister Georg von Eichstatt soon arrived from Esel.
In January 1262, the Grand Duke of Lithuania Mindovg with an army invaded Livonia. The Livonian Master with an army launched a campaign against the Lithuanians, but on February 3, 1262, in the battle of Lenevardin, he suffered a major defeat. In this battle, George he Eichstaett was seriously wounded, because of which he could no longer command the Order Army. In the middle of 1262, the Livonian Magister Georg von Eichstaett voluntarily surrendered his position to Werner von Breithausen.
