Tanjungpinang ( indon. Tanjungpinang ) is the administrative center of the Indonesian province of Kepulauan Riau , the second largest city in the province. Commercial port of the archipelago. It is located in the southern part of Bintan Island, connected by sea with Batam , Singapore (40 km) and Johor Bahru .

Content
History
Tanjungpinang has been a political center for 500 years since the Portuguese defeated Malacca and Sultan Mahmoud was forced to flee to Tanjungpinang to resist the invasion of the Portuguese.
Tanjungpinang has always played first roles in Malay culture . Hundreds of centuries ago, the city became a major shopping center, attracting both local merchants and travelers from India , China and the west. The city also attracted immigrants from China and other regions, largely repeating the path of Malacca, which had turned into a regional center three centuries earlier.
Attractions
Tanjungpinang has a cultural center for Malay music and dance. Festivals and other shows are regularly held here. Famous Buddhist temples are located in the nearby town of Sengarang.
Peñegat Island
Next to Tanjungpinang is Penyegat Island, where the old palace of the Sultan of Riau and the royal tombs are located, as well as the tomb of Raji Ali Haji , the creator of the first Malay alphabet. There is also a functioning mosque. The issue of including the island in the UNESCO World Heritage List is being considered .
Monument to Raja Haji Fisabillah
The city erected a 28-meter monument to Raj Haji Fisabillah, who died in the battle for Malacca against the Dutch in 1784. Raja Haji Fisabillah was a Malay ruler whose castle was located on the island of Peñegat.
