Biography
Born in the family of the Voronezh governor Peter Alexandrovich Sontsov and his wife, Ekaterina Dmitrievna, nee Chertkova. He inherited a passion for antiquities from his uncle A.D. Chertkov .
Having been educated in the Page Corps , he was an adjutant at the count of I.F. Paskevich ; participated in the Polish (1831) and Hungarian (1848β1849) campaigns. Then he was an adjutant to the Moscow Governor-General A. G. Shcherbatov , after which he retired.
In 1860, Sontsov published his first numismatic essay, βMoney and Pools of Ancient Russia, Grand Duchess and Specific,β with 123 figures in 12 tables. Later researchers noted that the images of coins in the works of Sontsov were made not from prints, but from the hand, and, as a result, had significant inaccuracies. There were many inaccuracies in the descriptions of coins. D.P. Sontsov made his efforts to ensure that collecting coins was not only collectible, but also had a scientific character: he criticized the sports questions raised by others, accompanied many descriptions of ancient coins with archaeological and historical commentaries, and compiled a manual (on princely genealogy) for engaged in numismatics of a specific period (1869), made extracts from chronicles and acts; while he lacked the appropriate education.
His collections of coins (Roman, Polish, Russian, Czech, Hungarian) were donated by his son, D. D. Sontsov, to the Rumyantsev Museum . Several roughly counterfeit counterfeit coins were discovered in the collections.
