VESA BIOS Extensions ( VBE ) - BIOS expansion in the VESA standard, additional video card BIOS features in relation to the basic video BIOS for VGA , allowing the adapter to request a list of supported video modes and their parameters (resolution, color, addressing methods, scanning and .) and change these settings to match the adapter with a specific monitor.
In fact, VBE is a standard software interface with VESA-compatible cards - when working through video BIOS, it allows you to do without a specialized video card driver .
VBE uses the Int 10h interrupt function range (AH = 4Fh; AX = 4F00h, 4F01h, 4F02h, 4F03h, 4F04h, 4F05h, 4F06h, 4F07h, 4F08h, 4F09h, 4F0Ah, 4F10h, 4FFh) [1] .
Standard VBE 1.2 was released in 1991, 2.0 in 1994 [2] , 3.0 in 1998.
Linux supports using VBE with the vesafb driver [3] . FreeBSD supports VBE via vga (4) [4]
