Biography

Sugiya was born on November 23, 1896 in the city of Surakarta ( Dutch East Indies ) in the family of a Muslim court official who adhered to the Islamic current of the Abangans . After some time, the family moved to Yogyarta , where in 1909 Sugia began his studies at the Jesuit College of St. Francis Xavier, led by the Jesuit missionary, France van Lit. At this college, Sugia became interested in Catholicism and on December 24, 1910, he was baptized . In 1915, Albert Sugia graduated from college and was engaged in teaching activities for one year.

From 1917 to 1919 he studied at the Catholic seminary . In 1919 he went to Holland , where he entered as a novice in the monastic order of the Jesuits. In September 1920, he took monastic vows . Since 1923, he studied philosophy in Udenbosch, after which he was sent home to the city of Muntilan, where he taught for two years. In 1928 he came to Holland, where he studied theology in Maastricht . On August 15, 1931, Albert Sugia was ordained a priest by Bishop Roermond, and the respectful ending of the “Pranate” was added to his name. After the ordination, he was sent to the East Indies, where he was a parish priest in a parish in Yogyart. In 1934, he was appointed rector of the parish in Bintaran.

On August 1, 1940, the Holy See established the Apostolic Vicariate of Semarang, and Pope Pius XII appointed Albert Sugiyapranata the first bishop of this Catholic structure and the titular bishop of Danaba .

Following Indonesia's independence, Albert Sugiyapranata was involved in the delivery of food to Semarang and the settlement of unrest in the city. In 1947, he was forced to move to Yogyarta due to threats. During the Revolutionary War, Albert Sugiyapranata promoted the international recognition of Indonesia.

On January 3, 1961, the Apostolic Vicariate was transformed into an archdiocese and Albert Sugiyapranata became archbishop.

In 1961, he participated in the first session of the Second Vatican Council .

July 22, 1963 Albert Sugiyapranata died in Holland. His body was transported to Indonesia, where he was declared a national hero and buried in the cemetery of heroes in Semarang.
