Shi Lan ( Chinese trad. 施琅 , Pinyin : Shī Láng , 1620–1696) is a naval commander who served the Ming Dynasty and the Manchu Qing Empire , which conquered Taiwan .

Shi Lan was born into a wealthy family in Jinjiang , Fujian , in 1621. In his youth, he studied martial art, warfare at sea, and navigation. He took part in sea trips. In 1646, he transferred to the service of the Manchu Qing Dynasty. By the 1660s occupies high posts on the career ladder.
In 1681, Emperor Kangxi appoints Shi Lan as the head of the Armed Forces of the Empire against the Minsk loyalists based in Taiwan (the so-called Dongning state). Already on July 8, 1683, after considerable training, Shi Lan withdrew forces of 300 warships and 20 thousand soldiers, and as a result of bloody battles by October 3, he reaches Taiwan and forces the remaining troops and officials to surrender.
After outstanding victories, Shi Lan receives significant honors from the emperor. His descendants receive a number of privileges. In modern China, Shi Lan remains a controversial figure, leaving behind heavy memories in Taiwan as a conqueror and a cruel ruler.
