Zoni ( jap. 雑 煮 zo: ni ) is a Japanese dish that is a soup with rice mochi [1] . In Japan, it is considered a New Year's dish [2] . Additional ingredients can serve a variety of vegetables, fish, chicken, herbs and so on. In terms of specific ingredients, the dish has many regional differences.
It is believed that originally zoni was a samurai field kitchen dish, which was made from rice cakes, vegetables and dried foods in military camps. Subsequently, it ceased to be food exclusively samurai, becoming a dish common among all people. The tradition to eat zoni for the New Year presumably dates back to the Muromachi period , when it was prepared to be presented to the gods [3] .
