History
For a long time, the district was one of the main areas of action of the Free Aceh movement.

According to the 2008 census, 352,927 people lived in the district.
Economics
The Okrug has rich oil deposits, and iron and lead are mined. Fisheries and food industry are developed. There are palm and rubber plantations, cocoa is grown.
