K-ch line

Isogloss in Alemannic dialect space

The k-ch line ( German k / ch-Linie ) [1] is the isogloss of the German-speaking language space, one of the most important lines of the Alemannian dialect space . The use of the German explosive k [k] in the initial position ( K opf, K irch ) and after l and r ( star k , mäl k e ) is taken north of the line. In the same cases, the deaf velar alumnus ch [x] is used south of the line ( Ch opf, Ch ilche, star ch , mäl ch e ). The Kura and Basel dialects are the only dialects that are located behind the line and do not accept ch .

The line is wedge-shaped, starting in the Alsatian Zundgau , passing to the northeast and reaching its highest point at the Upper Badbaian Oppingen ( Freiburg in Breisgau ). Immediately after that, it turns southeast and goes in the direction of Lake Constance near Radolfzell . Behind the lake, the line runs along the Rhine , dividing Switzerland , on the one hand, Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein - on the other.

The line was first recorded in this way in 1887 in the German Language Atlas . Later, however, in Upper Baden, the line began to shift to the south, yielding to the High German norm .

Notes

  1. ↑ In dialectology, this isoglossa does not have a name reflecting its proximity to a certain area (such as, for example, for the Benrath line or the Jürdingen line ), therefore, in German sources, the line is usually called k / ch, kind / chind or k -ch.
