History
David Haviland was an American entrepreneur, originally from New York , whose business interests were china . In search of new business opportunities, he came to the French city of Limoges and already in 1842 he managed to send the first shipments of Limoges porcelain to the United States of America . It is important to note that he played a key role in the development and implementation in 1873 of a new process for decorating porcelain products. [one]
In 1890, David's son, Theodore Haviland , built a very large factory in Limoges, which stood out from other local porcelain factories. At this plant, new technologies for firing and decorating porcelain products were introduced. After him, Haviland was under the control of his grandson, William Haviland , and then the great-grandson of Theodore Haviland II .
Our time
Nowadays, Haviland & Co. still managed by the Heviland family. Production facilities have been modernized and now, in addition to porcelain, the company sells silverware , crystal and gift products. Haviland & Co constantly takes part in international exhibitions [2]
Porcelain
Haviland porcelain is one of the most prestigious Limoges porcelain. Many items made in previous eras still exist and are considered valuable collectibles. It is estimated that there are now around 60,000 Haviland porcelain products worldwide [3] . However, it is difficult to establish the exact number, since many products have never been included in catalogs and have not received individual items, and factory accounting archives are not complete.
Attempts at cataloging products have led to the emergence of several independent systems, including Schleiger Nomenclature and unofficial collector catalogs.
Schleiger Nomenclature
This numbering system was developed by Arlene Schleiger in the early 1930s and published in 6 volumes. The nomenclature contains approximately 4000 pieces of porcelain manufactured by Haviland & Co. [four]
