Molybdenum (II) chloride forms a yellow amorphous substance insoluble in water, toluene and acetic acid . Soluble in ethanol and diethyl ether .
Molecules of molybdenum chloride are hexameric and have the structure [Mo 6 Cl 8 ] Cl 4 .
It forms a crystalline hydrate of the composition [Mo 6 Cl 8 ] Cl 4 • 8H 2 O — tetragonal crystals, space group P 4 / nnc , cell parameters a = 0.906 nm, c = 2.804 nm, Z = 4.
