In 86 BC e. Mithridates deported the inhabitants of the city of Chios , after which he transferred these lands to the Pontic soldiers. [2]
Then he met Berenice, who lived in the capital of the island. She became his concubine and third wife. There is speculation that Eupator renamed the island's capital in honor of his wife. [2] A new name survived until the Roman invasion in 85 BC. e. [2]
In 72/71 BC e. Mithridates gave Berenice poison, so that she would avoid being captured by the soldiers of the Roman consul Lucullus and possible violence by the Romans. When the poison didn’t work, she was killed by the eunuch . Together with her, another wife of Mithridates, Monim and his sister Roxanne and Statir, were killed [3] .
