Biography
He studied philosophy and Germanic studies in Vienna. He began his career by writing theater reviews for the Zagreb newspaper Agramer Tagblatt . In 1914, his first directing experience at the National Theater (HNK) took place .
Havella at that time called for the creation of a national Croatian acting school that would not be inferior to the one at the National Theater (HNK), staging vivid Croatian performances and realizing numerous productions of the national opera repertoire. In particular, he particularly insisted on staging dramatic plays on the subject of Croatian historical heritage.
In the post-war period - after the Second World War - Branko Havella worked in Bratislava ( Slovakia ), Ostrava ( Czech Republic ) and Ljubljana ( Slovenia ). Finally, in 1949, Havella returned to his native Zagreb, and in the early 1950s achieved the transformation of the Regional Acting School ( Croatian Zemaljska glumačka škola ) in Zagreb into the Academy of Theater Arts (now the Academy of Dramatic Art / Croatian Akademija dramske umjetnosti ).
In 1953, Branco Havella laid the foundation for the creation of the Drama Theater in Zagreb (now the Havell Drama Theater ).
Branco Havella personally directed over 270 dramatic performances, operas and operettas. He is also the author of important monograph books for Croatian theater studies: Croatian Acting Arts ( Croatian Hrvatsko glumište ), Actor and Theater ( Croatian Glumac i kazalište ) and Literature and Theater ( Croatian Književnost i kazalište ).
Branco Havella is one of the largest artists in the theater of Croatia. An artist and theorist, organizer and teacher, director, translator and writer, whose life and work defined an entire era of Croatian culture, in particular theater.
Branco Havella was also the referee in the first match of the football championship in the territory of present-day Croatia - this happened in September 1912 during the match between HŠK Croatia and Tipografski ŠK .
