Lakshmi Tatma ( Hindi लक्ष्मी तात्मा , born December 31, 2005 , Araria , India ) is an Indian girl who became famous due to the fact that having a twin parasite of an ishiopag fused with her pelvis, the development of which stopped in the womb, was born with eight limbs: four arms and four legs. In November 2007, she was successfully operated on, delivered from the twin parasite and even began to learn to walk.

This operation has become one of the most complex and expensive in the history of medicine and has been widely covered in the largest world media.

Background

Lakshmi, born in 2005, was the second child in a family of three [1] . Lakshmi's parents were poor day laborers who earned less than $ 1 a day, so they could not even think of an operation for their daughter. The girl at birth was named after the Hindu wealth goddess Lakshmi , who had four arms. There are reports that after birth, she repeatedly became the object of worship from the superstitious local residents, who considered her the embodiment of this goddess [2] . Lakshmi's parents also said that at one time they were forced to hide their daughter, as people from a traveling circus wanted to abduct her. Before the operation, the girl suffered from ulcers and continuous fever. The twins had a common blood flow in the pelvic region, each of the twins had only one healthy kidney [3] (the second one was necrotic).

Lakshmi was unable to stand and walk, but she could move, pulling herself forward a little. The twin parasite was removed from her body in November 2007 during an operation at Sparsh Hospital in Bangalore , Karnataka , India, which lasted 27 hours. A total of 30 surgeons who worked in shifts took part in it [4] . The most complicated and expensive operation, fully funded by the hospital, was successful, during which a healthy kidney from the body of a twin parasite was transferred to Lakshmi’s body. It was found that without surgery Lakshmi could not survive to adolescence.

The media attention to Lakshmi was very significant not only during the operation, but also afterwards. In February 2008, it was reported that doctors were planning another operation to bring her legs closer together [5] , which was subsequently successfully performed. In 2010, a program on Channel 4 [6] was dedicated to her, where it was shown that Lakshmi was recovering and even learning to walk with the help of walkers.
