Biography

Juozas Montvila was born on January 3, 1885 in the village of Goudine , near the city of Marijampole (at that time this territory belonged to the Russian Empire , now Lithuania ), in the family of Kazys Montvila and Magdalena, born Karalyavicius. Two years later, the family moved to the village of Néndrškiai , also not far from Marijampole , which is considered the “small homeland” of Juozas; here in 1887 - 1898 his seven brothers and sisters were born. He graduated from the gymnasium in Marijampole , priestly seminary in the city of Sejny (now Poland ), which at that time served as an important center of Lithuanian culture. Ordained to the priesthood March 22, 1908 . Appointed Vicar to the parish in the city of Lipsk (now Poland ).

He secretly also performed services for local Greek Catholics , in connection with which the royal authorities forbade any pastoral service to him. Participated in the publication of the Catholic illustrated weekly in the Lithuanian language “Šaltinis” (“Source”), the monthly “Vadovas” (“Head”), intended for priests. He painted illustrations for books and newspapers published in Vilna.

Not being able to exercise priestly functions in Tsarist Russia, he decided to emigrate to the USA , where his relatives already lived and there were large Lithuanian communities. To do this, I went to England , where I purchased a 2nd class ticket for the first flight of the Titanic and boarded the ship in the port of Southampton . At the time of the collision of "Titanic" with an iceberg was in the ship's library. According to surviving eyewitnesses, he did not take the opportunity to take a seat in a lifeboat, but instead he comforted people and listened to those who wanted to confess .
