Dreamtime Return is recorded after visiting Australia and exploring the local Aboriginal culture. The name refers to " sleep time ", a concept in Australian mythology that describes the period before the creation of the Earth, when the physical, material world did not yet exist.

The music presented on the discs is filled with slow electronic sounds, in places a variety of ethnic percussion instruments, traditional chants and voices of Australian aborigines are heard. The composition “Truth in Passing” contains atmospheric losses on the piano, which is uncharacteristic for the author. The track “The Other Side” was recorded live with the participation of Kevin Bracheny , who played along with the electronic wind instrument Steiner EWI. This composition was created long before the release of the album; it was first played back in 1986 on the National Public Radio in the Hearts of Space program. After the release of Dreamtime Return, Roach went on another trip to Australia.

Along with the release of the Dreamtime Return CD version, vinyl was also released, while the tracks “Truth in Passing” and “Through a Strong Eye” from the tracklist disappeared, and some audio tracks were reduced, for example, “Looking for Safety” was cut by more than Twenty minutes. In 2002, the album was included in the list of the 25 most significant ambient albums of all time .
