Maurice Cullen was born on the island of Newfoundland in the city of St. Johns . In 1870, Cullen moved with his family to Montreal , where he began his art education at the art school at the Art and Industry Council of Montreal with the sculptor Louis-Philippe Hebert.

Like many other artists of his generation, he went to Paris to continue his artistic education. After arriving in Paris in 1889, he began to study at the School of Fine Arts , where French teachers of the academic direction Jean-Leon Gerome and Elie Delaunay became his teachers. But when Cullen returned to Montreal by 1895, he already professed the principles of French impressionism.

Working in the landscape genre, he eventually became the true chronicler of Montreal. Especially he was able to twilight or night scenes with constantly flickering lights. Callen also had wonderful winter landscapes - he is one of the great artists of snowy Canada. Like his colleague and friend James Wilson Morris, Maurice Cullen over time becomes one of the main figures in Canadian art.

His talent was romantic - he managed to “grab” light and mood. Some of his works were influenced by William Blair Bruce, whom Cullen often visited in Greuze in 1892-94. Cullen, in turn, influenced many of his students when he taught for many years at the Montreal Art Society [3] , and he particularly influenced Suzor-Kote, whose workshop was located in the same building as Maurice Cullen’s studio.
