History

The Anthony Order of St. Hormizd of Chaldea was founded in 1808 by the monk Djibrail Danbo with the support of Bishop Mosul of the future Patriarch John VIII Gormizd . In 1808, Djibrail Danbo settled with several monks in the abandoned monastery of St. Rabban of Hormizd. Djibrail Danbo lived in Rome from 1827 to 1830 and during this time was engaged in the canonical approval of the monastic order he founded.

After the founder’s death, the monastic community was reorganized by the former patriarch of the monastery, Bishop of Amadia, the future Patriarch of Babylon, Joseph Audo . Bishop Joseph Audo sent a representative of the monastery to Rome asking him to approve the new order.

On September 26, 1845, Pope Gregory XVI approved the charter of the Anthony of St. Hormiz of the Chaldeans.

Present

In the middle of the 20th century, as a result of political circumstances in Iraq, the monastic order fell apart. Monastic life was restored in 1962.

In 2012, the order consisted of 7 monasteries and 42 monks, of which 22 people are priests [2] . Currently, the Anthony of St. Hormiz Chaldean work in various parishes of the Chaldean Catholic Church in Iraq, the USA, Australia, Iran, Lebanon and Syria. The central monastery of St. Anthony is located in Baghdad .
