Biography
In 1885, he graduated from the 1st St. Petersburg Gymnasium with a gold medal. In 1890 - the Military Medical Academy . For three years he improved in the clinic of hospital surgery of the Academy (the head is Professor V. A. Ratimov , and in 1893 he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medicine.
In 1893-1896 - Junior resident of the Kiev military hospital , head of the surgical and ear department; he happened to treat the commander of the district, General M.I. Dragomirov .
Since 1896, he was a senior assistant in the hospital surgery clinic of V. A. Ratimov, and since 1898, he was a private assistant professor. In 1900-1902 Acted as the head of the department. In 1902, he did not enter the competition for the post of head of the department of hospital surgery of the Academy ( S.P. Fedorov was elected) and resigned from the Academy.
In 1902-1904 - Leading surgeon and director of the French hospital in St. Petersburg, consultant-surgeon of the Nikolaev military hospital . With the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War, he was sent to the Far East: corps surgeon of the 3rd Siberian Army Corps , from February 24, 1904 - at the front; then the chief surgeon of the Manchurian army, the chief field surgeon. He was shell-shocked, in connection with which in March 1905 he returned to Petersburg.
He continued to work at the Military Medical Academy, at the same time as a consultant to the Nikolaev military hospital, director and head (until 1908) of the surgical department of the French hospital of St. Magdalene. In 1905-1906 - Head of the faculty surgical clinic of the Women's Medical Institute .
Since 1906 - Director of the first St. Petersburg Orthopedic Institute in Russia; at the same time continued to work at the Military Medical Academy, and since 1911 - at the Psychoneurological Institute (professor of orthopedics).
In World War I, he was the chief surgeon of the Southwestern Front .
Since 1918, he was a professor of orthopedics at the 1st Petrograd Medical Institute , and also lectured on military field surgery at the Military Medical Academy and on orthopedics at the Institute for Advanced Medical Studies . He continued to work as director of the Orthopedic Institute. From 1924 until the end of his life, he headed the orthopedic department of the Central State Institute of Traumatology, created by combining the Orthopedic Institute with the Physiosurgical Institute .
Repeatedly elected chairman of the Surgical Society. N.I. Pirogov (was an honorary member) and the Leningrad Society of Orthopedic Traumatologists, was elected a member of the International Society of Surgeons, the American Society of Military Physicians, and the International Red Cross Conventions.
He was buried at the Smolensk Lutheran cemetery .

Scientific activity
In general surgery, he first introduced the use of morphine in abdominal operations (1901) and gave a physiological justification for its anti-shock effect. He proposed new operations for the treatment of hernias , prolapse of the rectum , and paralytic mowing of the face.
In 1905, after the Russo-Japanese War, he wrote "A Practical Guide to Military Field Surgery" - the second manual for Russian military field surgeons after the book by N. I. Pirogov .
He proposed about 30 surgical methods for the treatment of orthopedic deformities and diseases ( flat feet , curvature of the spine, childhood paralysis, etc.). He studied the origin of congenital and acquired curvature of the spine; proposed an explanation of the causes of scoliosis in the “muscle corset”.
He wrote the first Russian manual on orthopedics.
