Biography
William Ervis Blackley was born in , Missouri , on November 17, 1898 in the family of William J. Blakley (1870-1950) and Mary Blackley ( Mary E. Blakley , 1870-1942) [1 ] [2] . Soon after, their family moved to , Oklahoma .
During World War I Blackley served in the US Army . After that, at the beginning of 1925 he moved to Dallas . He studied accounting and became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) [3] . He also studied law on his own, and in 1933 received the right to practice law, after which he began working at a law firm in Dallas .
From that time, he began to buy land, which was growing well in price. At one point, he owned 250,000 acres of land in Texas and New Mexico . After that, he invested part of the money in insurance and banking companies, as well as in oil production. At one time, he also owned a 34% stake in Braniff International Airways [3] . As a result, he became the owner of a large fortune, and in 1957 entered the list of the richest people in the USA, compiled by Fortune magazine ( "Wealthiest Americans - 1957" ), where his fortune was estimated from 100 to 200 million dollars [4] .
In 1957, Texas U.S. Senator Price Daniel became Governor of Texas . In this regard, outgoing governor Allan Shivers appointed William E. Blackley as senator from January 15, 1957, before a new senator is elected in an early election. Blackley himself did not participate in these elections and resigned as senator on April 28, 1957, and Ralph Yarborough, who won the election, became his successor.
In 1958, Blackley participated in the regular election of the US Senator from Texas, but lost the primary election to Ralph Yarborough, who, as a result, remained in the post of Senator.
In 1961, another Texas senator, Lyndon Johnson, resigned to become US Vice President . Then Texas Governor Price Daniel appointed William E. Blackley US Senator (January 3, 1961). Blackley also participated in the subsequent extraordinary election of the senator, but with a slight advantage he was ahead of the Republican John Tower , who replaced Blackley as Senator on June 14, 1961.
After that, William Ervis Blackley left politics and again went into business related to his business. Blackley passed away in Dallas on January 5, 1976. He is buried at Restland Cemetery in Dallas. [2]

In honor of William E. Blackley named the library of - William A. Blakley Library [5] . This university is located in Irving near Dallas.
