Project History
In March 2012, the first volume was published by Amphora Publishing House, in which there were 24 stories, and in December the second volume. The third volume was published in early 2014. After that, the publishing house changed to AST . The fourth volume was published at the end of 2015, the fifth - in October 2016. Initially, the total number of stories was expected to be 108 - according to the number of streets of the “old city” of Vilnius [1] , but in 2017 the sixth volume was published, which said that after recounting the streets there were 146 [2] , and therefore the sixth volume in 2018 was followed by the release of the seventh volume, in which 147 streets, lanes, squares, markets and bridges were already named [3] .
The presentation of the first book with the help of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania took place in the House of Jurgis Baltrušaitis [4] in Moscow in April 2012 and was accompanied by a thematic exhibition of photographs [5] [6] .
In Yaroslavl, based on the first volume, the city game "Tales of the Old City" was held [7] .
“Tales of Old Vilnius” are available on the non-profit website Kroogi [8] The second volume file, presented on Kroogi, has a different set of photographs that differs from the printed version [9] .
Some stories are translated into Belarusian [10] [11] .
Design
On the cover of the first volume published by Amphora is a photograph of an arch with an angel figure in Uzhupis . On the cover of the second volume is a reflection of the Church of St. Anne .
Photos of the author.
Starting with the fourth volume, in connection with the change of publishing house, a new design with illustrations by Renata Magzumova began to be applied (the first three volumes were also reprinted in a new design).
Reviews and criticism
Olga Lebyodushkina believes that Max Fry presents “the city as an existential experience” and considers the first volume of “Tales of the Old Vilnius” together with the book by Thomas Venzlova, published at the same time: [12]
With all the differences, for the Russian reader, both books are unexpectedly close, because both are inside a common cultural plot.
Olga Balla-Gertman, exploring the "intuitive ontology of the Fraevian universe" in the context of the teachings of Levi-Strauss , discovers in the collection "a real myth that is emerging before our eyes":
Vilnius stories are essentially doing the same thing that the Fram project has been doing for many years, especially closer to its end. This is a grope of ways along which a sense of magic and mystery of the world could return to a modern person, post-religious and post-theistic ... [13]
Reviewing the fourth volume of “Tales”, Elena Kuznetsova from Fontanka.ru believes that “the book loses the quality of the plots to the first three volumes”, while noting the fidelity of this volume to the general trend:
The work has little in common with the traditional fantasy genre. Rather, it is about how thin the line between reality and magic is, and how easy it is to inadvertently cross. [fourteen]
