IMDb

The protagonists of the series are an alien time traveler named Doctor ( Matt Smith ), his companions, Amy Pond ( Karen Gillan ) and Rory Williams ( Arthur Darville ), father Rory Bryan ( Mark Williams ), Nefertiti (Rienne Steele) and John Riddell, English big game hunter ( Rupert Graves ). All of them land on a large spaceship aboard which are dinosaurs. Later they learn that the ship is an ark built by the , and that the Silurians themselves were killed by a certain Solomon ( David Bradley ) engaged in piracy and illegal trade.

“Dinosaurs on a ship” was conceived as a comic episode based on the idea of a team of developers of special effects. The development of the main plot and characters became a joint work of Chibnell and the main screenwriter and executive producer of the series, Stephen Moffat . During the discussion, it became clear that due to the limited budget, the story of the dinosaurs could not be in the center, so it was decided to expand the plot. As a result, dinosaurs faded into the background, and their images were created using both computer graphics and the creation of mechanical structures. Together with the next episode, “A City Called Mercy ,” “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship” became part of the first production unit; filming was planned for early 2012 and took place on the beach of of Glamorgan . As a result, the episode was watched by 7.57 million British viewers, it received mostly positive reviews from critics, despite the fact that the opinions of critics regarding some of the characters and robots of Solomon were divided.

Background

A doctor is a traveler in space and time. It looks like a man, but belongs to the race of the Time Lords from the planet Gallifrey . Representatives of his race have the ability to regenerate (reborn) as they get into fatal situations, as a result of which their appearance and partially their character completely change. The Doctor is the last Time Lord. Deprived of his home, he saves other worlds, including humanity [1] .

As a way of transportation, the Doctor uses TARDIS ( TARDIS - T ime A nd R elative D imension (s) I n S pace) - a living time machine (and at the same time a spaceship ) that looks like an English blue police booth of the 1960s, but containing much more than it seems (“it is more inside than outside”) [2] . As an improvised tool for performing small operations with objects (locking and unlocking locks, fixing devices, scanning something, etc.), the Doctor uses a sound screwdriver . In addition, he has a non-human intellect [1] .

Starting from the fifth season of the television series (2010), the Doctor, or rather, his eleventh incarnation, travels with his new companion named Amelia Pond , who appeared in the opening episode of the fifth season of the “ Eleventh Hour ” [3] . Also traveling with them (in the fifth season from time to time, starting from the sixth - constantly) is Amy's groom (and later husband), Rory Williams , who became one of the few male companions [4] .

Story

Doctor , being in 1334 BC. e., after another adventure brings Queen Nefertiti to show her the TARDIS . At this time, he receives a call from the Indian Space Agency (IKA), in which he is informed that the Doctor should immediately arrive in 2367 A.D. e., otherwise a huge spaceship will collide with the Earth in just six hours. ICA plans include destroying the ship with missiles if the Doctor fails and does not stop the threat. Taking Nefertiti with him, the Doctor sets off for the ship, having previously glanced in 1902 to pick up John Riddell, an adventurer and big game hunter, from the African plains, and in 2012, for Amy and Rory (accidentally taking with him Rory’s father, Brian). It turned out that 10 months have passed since the last meeting of the Doctor with his companions (episode " Isolator of the Far Away "). When the TARDIS materializes on a spaceship, the Doctor and the rest quickly find out that there are dinosaurs on it.

Having requested the location of the engines from the ship’s computer, the Doctor accidentally takes himself, Rory and Brian to an unknown beach, which, as it turned out, is the engine room that produces tidal fuel for the engine. Meanwhile, Amy, Nefertiti and Riddell browse the ship’s magazines and find out that the ship is nothing more than a huge space ark built by the ( humanoids from the episode “ Hungry Earth ” / “ Cold Blood ”) 65 million years ago to avoid death from the fall of an asteroid . They also find out that, for some unknown reason, there is not a single living Silurian on board (given that Silurians who were sleeping in suspended animation were once registered by the computer as living). In addition, a small ship is moored at the very center of the ark. While Amy, Nefertiti and Riddel are trying to find out who else could be on the ark, the Doctor, Rory and Brian flee from a pack of hungry pterodactyls and hide in a cave, where they encounter two large, but somewhat silly robots. The robots accompany the trinity to Solomon, the merchant and owner of that same moored ship. Solomon is injured and needs medical attention. He is very surprised when he does not find the Doctor in any database of the Universe (the Doctor had already erased all data about himself by that time). It was also Solomon who killed all the Silurians on board, but could not take control of the ark, as a result of which the computer returned the huge spacecraft to its starting point, heading for a collision with the Earth. Soon, Solomon realizes who Nefertiti is and decides instead of dinosaurs to pick it up and sell it on the black market. Despite the fact that the Doctor refuses to give Nefertiti, the queen herself accepts the villain's ultimatum to save the rest.

After Solomon flew away with the Egyptian queen on board, the rest face several problems: IKA has already launched rockets into the ark, while Amy and Riddell are trying to shoot back from hostile dinosaurs. The doctor finds a solution - he takes out one of the parts of the ark’s computer (as it turned out, the beacon on which the ICA missiles are oriented) and goes to TARDIS to Solomon, where he takes Nefertiti and leaves the beacon, as a result of which the rockets destroy Solomon’s ship with him and his robots assistants. In the end, the Doctor sends dinosaurs back to the Jurassic (leaving a sign that says "Siluria"), Riddell and Nefertiti, who chose to stay with the hunter, in 1902, and Amy and Rory in 2012. Later, Ponds receive postcards from Brian, who travels with the Doctor for some time in space and time.

Production

Scripting and Casting

David Bradley was approved for the role of Solomon, the main antagonist of the episode

The showrunner of the series, Stephen Moffat , admitted that the "secret of success" was the movement of dinosaurs on a spaceship [5] . The episode was based on the idea that the teams of special effects developers and Millenium FX proposed - to return the dinosaurs to Doctor Who [6] . Earlier, the Doctor met with dinosaurs in the series “ Dinosaur Invasion ”, released in 1974 [7] . While the “Isolator of Daleks” became a gloomy and dark episode, “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship” was more conceived as a comic, humorous [8] . As a result, Stephen Moffat instructed Chris Chibnell to write a script on the theme “A spaceship with dinosaurs is approaching the Earth, and the Earth is sounding the alarm” [9] . Chibnell had previously worked on episodes of Doctor Who - he authored the scripts for the episodes 42 , Hungry Earth / Cold Blood , and several scripts for the episodes of the spin-off series and the television series Torchwood [10] [11] . Moffat also proposed making the ship Silurian, and Chibnell, who “returned” Silurians in the scenario of the Hungry Earth / Cold Blood episodes, admitted that it was “a good continuation of the story, revealing more information about them to you, despite the fact that the plot it does not concern them directly ” [12] .

Chibnell suggested taking a “mixed” team consisting of characters randomly taken from different points in time and space [9] . According to him, in Doctor Who, "characters can meet each other who can never do this in other shows," and the episode itself tells of a "motley" team, whose members can "collide" with each other [8] . Nefertiti’s decision not to return at one time is consistent with historical data, according to which it is not known when and where she died [13] . Chibnell also suggested introducing Rory’s father, since Rory and Amy, according to the creators, will travel with the Doctor for only four more episodes , but nothing has been said about Rory’s family [6] [14] . Actor Mark Williams , who played Rory’s father, was previously involved in recording the audio of the adventures of the Fifth Doctor , The Eternal Summer [15] . Rupert Graves , who played a hunter named Riddell, had previously starred in the TV series Sherlock , created by Stephen Moffat. [16] The prototype of Solomon, the character of David Bradley , was a certain "famous long-haired owner of a nightclub" [17] . Chibnell described Solomon as follows: “On the one hand, he looks like a businessman, on the other - like a Somali pirate” [9] . Bradley and Williams previously had to work together - both participated in the filming of a series of films about Harry Potter [18] . Later, Bradley accepted offers to star in the role of the First Doctor in a biographical production drama for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who's Adventure in Space and Time [19] . To sound Solomon's assistant robots, the creators invited the comic duo of David Mitchell and [20] . Richard Hope, who played Silurian Blaitel, whose video magazines are viewed by Amy, Nefertiti, and Riddell, previously played Silurian scientist Malohai in the episodes Hungry Earth, Cold Blood, and River Song Wedding [18] . According to the executive producer of the seventh season, Caroline Skinner, for the episode "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" was chosen "beautiful" cast [20] .

Filming and working with special effects

“Dinosaurs on a Spaceship,” along with the episode “A City Called Mercy, ” entered the first production unit of the seventh season; Director of both episodes was appointed [21] [22] . The episodes became the director’s debut as part of Doctor Who, previously Metssteen did not take part in creating episodes of this series [23] . For the filming of the episode, some of the largest sets in the history of the show were built [24] . The scenes in the “engine room” were filmed at the end of February 2012 at , Vail of Glamorgan [7] [25] [26] . Previously, this beach was used in the episodes of “ Judgment Day ” and “ The End of the Journey ” as the Bay of the Bad Wolf, as well as in the episodes of “ Time of the Angels ” / “ Flesh and Stone ” as the surface of the planet Alpha Metraxis [27] .

When creating special effects and scenery, the production team should first of all take into account the budget of the episode; Chibnell subsequently gave the following commentary on this situation: “We could easily spend £ 300 million ... if we had them” [6] . In addition, the plot could not revolve around dinosaurs alone, so Chibnell used another storyline as a central one [8] . The scene in which Amy, Riddel and Nefertiti are stuck in the aisle in front of a huge sleeping tyrannosaurus was ultimately almost completely cut out during installation due to the fact that computer models of predatory dinosaurs were expensive. However, the developers from Millenium FX decided that they could use the baby cub of a tyrannosaurus, which they designed for the exhibition [12] . In the episode, many “popular” dinosaurs were shown: some were built from scratch by mechanical structures, others were computer models [8] . For his trip to Triceratops, Smith had to put on special pants under his trousers and, according to the actor’s recollections, it was “several hours of pain, laughter, but it was worth it” [28] . Partly triceratops was built by the production team - this part was subsequently "saddled" by Smith, Darville and Williams - and partly was recreated on a computer [29] . The emblem of the series in the opening credits, in accordance with the “blockbuster themes” of each of the first five episodes of the seventh season [30] , was stylized as a dinosaur skin [18] . At the San Diego- 2012 International Comedian , the first preview of the episode took place [5] .

Show

The premiere of "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" took place on September 8, 2012 on the British channel BBC One [31] and the American channel [32] . According to the ratings of that evening, the episode was watched by 5.5 million Britons [33] , and after calculating the overall rating of impressions, this figure increased to 7.57 million [34] . In addition, the episode gathered 1.8 million online hits on the website, making Dinosaurs on a Spaceship the second most watched episode of the seventh season, losing the title to its predecessor, The Far-Out Insulator [35] . episode was 87 out of 100 (excellent) [36] [37] . The episode was broadcast on the Canadian television channel , on which an average of 575,000 viewers watched it; “Dinosaurs on a spaceship” has become the most popular premiere of the week among channel broadcasts [38] .

Criticism and reviews

In general, the episode "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" received positive ratings, with the exception of a small number of negative reviews. Dan Martin from The Guardian columnist found the episode “funny” and praised the quality of the scenery and dinosaurs, as well as the full appearance of Amy and Rory as satellites. Despite the fact that he called the series “baseless” and “a story built around the name”, he admitted that it was “the best episode two of“ Doctor Who “in recent times.” The big drawback he called the use of darkness, which, in his opinion, “destroyed the balance enough to destroy everything” [13] . Like Martin, Charlie Anders called the episode “the funniest you can recall in recent years,” also noting the Doctor’s gradual distance from his companions, Amy and Rory, and the recurring motif of the season: Doctor “no one will recognize " [39] . Radio Times reviewer Patrick Malkern praised the fact that the dinosaurs featured in The Dinosaur Invasion have been replaced by "impeccably crafted" brethren. Bradley’s image of Solomon and the “new theory” of creating the ark, according to which the Silurians, and not people, built the ark, were also praised, as stated in earlier episodes [12] . Keith Phipps, a reviewer for The AV Club , rated “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship” a rating of B, finding it stereotyped, but “well shot.” In contrast to Martin’s opinion, he liked the dark corridors used in the episode [40] .
