Musical career (1960s - 1990s)
Born in El Paso , Texas, Jimmy Karl Black was of Native American descent, which he always emphasized. His catch phrase: “Hi boys and girls, my name is Jimmy Karl Black and I am an Indian of the group,” he said on the disc “ We're Only in It for the Money ” (1968) (the phrase can be heard in the tracks “ Are You Hung Up? ”and“ Concenration Moon ”). On the covers of Mothers CDs, it was usually reported that Black was responsible for “drums, vocals and poverty” [1] . He also starred in the Frank Zappa 200 Motels film, where he performed the song “Lonesome Cowboy Burt”. Jimmy Karl Black also performed several shows with Frank Zappa in 1975 and 1980 [1] , and also appeared as a guest vocalist on the song “You Are What You Is” on his album You Are What You You (1981). Jimmy Karl Black about Frank Zapp:
| I would tell him that I appreciate his friendship after many years, and that I learned a lot from him. I really loved Frank as a brother. [3] |
In the seventies he toured with the Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band and with Geronimo Black, which he founded with another former member of The Mothers, saxophonist Bank Gardner . [4] In the eighties, along with the same Bank Gardner and keyboard player Don Preston, he created The Grandmothers with other musicians who had previously played with Zappa, but the group soon split up. Soon, Jimmy moved to Austin , where he met with an English singer and musician Arthur Brown . In duet, they released an album consisting of the classic rhythm and blues standards Black, Brown and Blue and also performed together. In 1993, Jimmy moved to Europe, where he reformed The Grandmothers along with his long-time associates: Don Preston, Bank Gardner and new members; Dutch bass player Ainer Bladesipper and Italian guitarist Sandro Olivia [5] .
1990s - 2008
Jimmy Karl Black performed as a guest musician with Muffin Men (a tribute band based in Liverpool and performing Frank Zappa's repertoire), with John Larsen. In 2001, Steely Dan band member Walter Becker, asking the audience who remembers the original drummer of The Mothers of Invention, unsuccessfully tried to nominate Black in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , as one of the founders of this band. In 2007, Jimmy Carl Black's autobiography titled The Jimmy Carl Black Story , released by John Larsen, was released on audio media. [5] In August 2008, Jimmy was diagnosed with lung cancer. Three months later, on November 1, 2008, he died in Germany in the city of Traunstein . Black's memory concerts took place on November 9, 2008 at Bridgehouse II in London and December 7, 2008 in Crown Valley, California. He left the wife of Monica, three sons and two daughters [5] .
