Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play

The Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play is an American theater award awarded by the American Theater Wing Foundation and the Broadway League »The best actress who played a major role in a Broadway theater production. It was created in 1947 and named after the actress, director and co-founder of the American Theater Wing Foundation Antoinette "Tony" Perry.

For the entire existence of the award, 62 actresses received it. Actress Elaine May is the last award winner at the moment, she received her for her role as Gladys Green in the play Waverly Gallery. Actress Julie Harris is the absolute record holder in the nomination "Best Actress in a Play" both in the number of awards received and in the number of nominations: she is a five-time winner of the award, as well as a nine-time nominee for an award in this category.
