Basil Gras ( French Basile Gras ; January 2, 1836 - April 14, 1901) - General of the French army , who went down in history primarily as a developer of a breech-loading rifle with a longitudinally-sliding bolt under a metal weapon cartridge , based on the 1866 Shasspo rifle model, which his honor was called the " Gra Rifle ." Some sources call the invention of Gra "the evolutionary pinnacle of French single-shot rifles under a unitary cartridge " [1] .

While still in the rank of colonel, Basil Gras made a significant contribution to the development and subsequent industrial production of the Lebel rifle .
He was educated in Paris at the Polytechnic School , after which he became an instructor at the Normal School of Shooting ( l'École Normale de Tir ) in the Chalet . After this, Grae led the production of weapons in Saint-Etienne .
The peak of the career of Basil Gras was the appointment of the Minister of Arms of France [2] .
Basil Gras died on April 14, 1901 in the city of Auxerre .
