Blumke, Friedrich

Friedrich Blumke ( German: Friedrich Blümke ; February 18, 1898 - September 4, 1944 ) - German military commander, major general of the Wehrmacht , was appointed August 10, 1944 as acting commander of the 257th Infantry Division . According to unverified information, he probably managed to take the post of division commander. Knight of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross , the highest order of the Third Reich . He was seriously wounded by a shrapnel in his chest on August 24, 1944 near the village of Cureni-Emental, Moldova during an attack on a low-flying Soviet aircraft. He was captured by Soviet troops in September 1944 . He died on September 4, 1944 in a Soviet prisoner of war camp near Odessa .
