Biography

In 1964, meeting with drummer Jimmy Karl Black at a pawnshop [2] , Estrada founded The Soul Gigants, the group from which The Mothers of Invention was subsequently formed. Prior to The Soul Gigants, Estrada played on the band Roy Estrada and the Rocketeers, which released singles "Jungle Dreams (Part 1)" and "Jungle Dreams (Part 2)" on King Records .

He played in the group The Mothers of Invention until its dissolution in 1969. Then Roy Estrada together with Lowell George (also playing in The Mothers) created the group Little Feat and played on their first two albums. In 1972 he joined the group of Captain Beefheart, The Magic Band [3] , where he was given the pseudonym “Big Ears” (Orejón). In 1976 he returned to Frank Zappa and participated in the recording of his album Zoot Allures [4] [5] . His vocals also appear in the 1979 Zappa Baby Snakes film, and on the 1980s Zappa albums You Are What You Is (1981), Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch ( 1982) and The Man from Utopia (1983).

On October 27, 1977, Estrada was charged with sexually assaulting a minor. [6] In December 1994, Estrada was sentenced to six years in prison for indecent child abuse in Orange County , California. In January 2012, he pleaded guilty to a similar charge of repeated sexual abuse of a child in March 2008. The investigation proved that the musician had been engaged in sexual harassment for a long time. Roy Estrada was sentenced to twenty-five years in prison without the right to parole [1] .

The Grandmothers

In the 2000s, Estrada played with former bandmates from Mothers Of Invention. In 2002, he joined forces with other former members of The Mothers of Invention: Don Preston, and Napoleon Murphy Brock , as well as guitarist Ken Rossen and drummer Christopher Garcia to form The Grandmothers. Performing music by Frank Zappa, they gave more than 90 concerts. They performed at numerous concerts and festivals throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, including in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Norway and Switzerland. In 2005, guitarist Miroslav Tadic replaced Ken Rosser, Robbie Mangano has been a guitarist in all tours of European Grandemothers performances since 2009.

In 2003, Roy Estrada recorded his debut solo album Hamburger Midnight , recorded on Imkanish Records, where he once again collaborated with Jimmy Karl Black.

After conviction and imprisonment, his career ended.
