Monument History
The designing of the monument was started after the decree of the President of the Russian Federation of October 28, 2008 No. 1533 “On awarding the city of Veliky Novgorod the honorary title of the Russian Federation“ City of Military Glory “”. Several possible options for placing the stele were discussed: near the Victory Monument , at the monument to A. Nevsky on the Trade side, on the Builders Square, near the Cinema Center.
On August 5, 2009, the city planning council under the Administration of Veliky Novgorod determined the location of the stela "City of Military Glory" by choosing a square near the Cinema Center. As reported at the meeting, this territory is historically associated with the heroic deeds of our ancestors, and is architecturally suitable for placing a commemorative column. There are often veterans and spend free time with their families.
Within the framework of the open All-Russian competition for the best architectural and sculptural project of a stele installed in cities that were awarded the honorary title “City of Military Glory”, a team of authors was selected consisting of: Honored Architect of Russia, Full Member of the International Academy of Architecture I. N. Voskresensky, architects G. A. Ishkildin, V. V. Perfiliev, Honored Artist of Russia, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts, sculptor S. A. Shcherbakov .
A nationwide fundraising campaign was announced for the construction and installation of a stele in Veliky Novgorod. Money was transferred to a special account by enterprises and organizations, Novgorod, veterans of the Great Patriotic War, residents of other cities of the country. As of April 26, 2010, more than 6 million rubles were transferred to the Fund, 200 enterprises, organizations and collectives, about 7 thousand individuals made contributions.
The construction of the stele was started in March 2010 and completed in early May.
