Pusich, Spring

Vesna Pusić ( Croatian; Vesna Pusić ; March 25, 1953 ; Zagreb , Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian politician, one of the most prominent members of the liberal Croatian People’s Party . From December 23, 2011 to January 22, 2016 she served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Croatia in the center-left government of Zoran Milanovich .

Engaged in political activity in the early 1990s , she was a deputy for three consecutive terms, having been elected in the elections of 2000 , 2003 and 2007 . In addition, she fought for the presidency in the elections of 2009-2010 as a candidate from KNP-LD , coming in fifth with 7.25% of the vote. During her third deputy term in 2008-2011 , she led the parliamentary commission to monitor the progress of negotiations on Croatia's accession to the European Union.

Biography

Spring Pusich was born in Zagreb , in the family of the professor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Zagreb, Eugene Pusich. Her mother, Cherry, was a professor of English [2] , and her brother Zoran was a prominent activist in the civil rights and peace movement.

In 1971 she graduated from high school, and in 1976 - the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Zagreb, where she studied sociology and philosophy [3] .

From 1975 to 1979 she was a member of the International Research Group, conducted research on industrial democracy in Europe. From 1976 to 1978 she worked as a researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Ljubljana [2] .

Since 1978 he has been working at the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Zagreb and teaches courses in the theory of industrial democracy and sociology of politics. In 1984, she received a doctorate in sociology at the same faculty, and in 1988 became a full-time professor [2] [3] .

In 1978, Pusic was one of the seven women who founded the first feminist organization in Yugoslavia Žena i društvo (woman and society), faced with fierce criticism from the then communist government [2] .

In 1990, Spring Pusic became one of the 28 founding members of the Croatian People’s Party ( Horv. Hrvatska narodna stranka ) after participating in the Coalition for Popular Accord ( Horv. Koalicija narodnog sporazuma ), a bloc of moderate nationalist and liberal parties formed on the eve of the first multiparty elections in Croatia, Held on April 22, 1990 In 1992, she left party activities, but returned to the same party in 1997 and subsequently became its head, from 2000 to 2008. First came to parliament after the 2000 elections .

In 1992, Pusic was one of the founders and director of the Erasmus Guild, a non-governmental and non-partisan analytical center for a culture of democracy, as well as the publisher and editor of Erasmus magazine, focusing on various transitional issues in Croatia, the countries of the former Yugoslavia and Eastern Europe [2] . The center ceased operations in 1998 .

In 2005 and 2008 [4] [5] she was appointed head of the National Committee for Negotiations with the EU, the body that oversees negotiations on Croatia’s accession to the EU and consists of members of parliament, as well as representatives of the President, academia, employers and trade union representatives.

In 2006 and 2008, Pusic served as vice chairman of the European Party of Liberal Democrats and Reformers [2] .

Pusich taught at the University of Chicago , at Cornell University (New York), as well as at the Methodist American University (Washington, DC) and the International Center for the Support of Scientists. Woodrow Wilson [2] .

Pusich lives with her husband in Zagreb. Her daughter currently lives in London and is studying film production under a master's program at the prestigious London Film School.
