In 1883 he formulated the so-called law of proportional resistance, which he derived theoretically and then confirmed by a large number of experiments (now this law is known as the "Kirpichev-Kik Law" with the priority of discovery beyond Kirpichev [3] ).

In the main form, this law is formulated as follows. The quantities of work required for the corresponding deformation of two geometrically similar and materially homogeneous bodies are proportional to the volumes or weights of these bodies. Corresponding deformations mean at the same time such modifications of both geometrically similar bodies, under the action of homogeneous forces and in the same period of time, as a result of which the bodies retain geometrically similar shapes. From this general position, in the form of a simple conclusion, all fundamental laws of the theory of resistance of materials are obtained, relating to various methods of deformation of bodies under the action of external forces: compressive, tensile, cleaving, twisting, and others. Kick’s law has an application, by the way, when calculating the magnitude of charges for gunpowder work, when designing the dimensions of machines for machining metals - turning, flattening, rolling and drawing machines, and so on.

The most famous work is Das Gesetz der proportionalen Widerstände und seine Anwendungen (Leipzig, 1885).
