Biography
Born in Lyon in 1818. Changed his name to Adolf Appian when he was fifteen. In the period from 1833 to 1836 he studied at the City School of Fine Arts. His first teachers were Jean-Michel Grobon (1770-1853) and Augustin-Alexander Tirrath (1789-1870). Later he opened a studio in Lyon and worked as a designer. In 1835 he came to Paris to participate in the Salon , but his work did not pass the selection of the jury. For the first time, Appian’s paintings will be exhibited at the Salon only in 1855, after which he will annually, until his death in 1898, take part in it. In 1852, he met Corot and Daubigny , who greatly influenced his style. In 1868 he was awarded the gold medal of the Paris Salon. Twice participated in the World Exhibitions - in London (1862) and Paris (1889). Appian was elected Chevalier of the Order of the Legion of Honor .
