Sports career
Like many other Turkish wrestlers, he played both in Greco-Roman wrestling tournaments and freestyle wrestling tournaments.
In 1951, he won the gold medal of the Mediterranean Games. In 1952, he competed in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Helsinki Olympics, but was only 5th. In 1953, he participated in the World Championship, but took only 4th place, but in 1954 he managed to become the vice-champion of the world for Greco-Roman wrestling. At the 1955 World Championships, Ismet Atla was only 5th, but in 1956 he won the World Cup.
At the Olympic Games in Melbourne (1956) he was again unlucky: he was the fourth again (this time in freestyle wrestling competitions). At the 1957 World Championships, Ismet Atla won the bronze medal in freestyle wrestling, and at the Olympics in Rome (1960) - the gold medal. At the World Championships in 1962, he performed both in freestyle and in Greco-Roman wrestling, and in Greco-Roman wrestling he won a bronze medal, and in the freestyle he became only the fourth.
After that, he ended his sports career, and began working as a coach and sports journalist.
