Content

Description

Slender and usually brightly colored two-winged insects, sometimes the body is covered with numerous hairs (for example, the Laphria thoracica tail is similar to a bumblebee). A specialized group of chicks, whose larvae live in wood, in passages previously created by xylophagous insects. The abdomen is usually cylindrical in shape (in some genera it is dorsoventrally flattened) [1] .

Systematics

More than 80 genera (listed below together with synonyms: 120 taxa) (about half of which are found only in the New World, mainly in the Neotropics), 6 tribes ( Andrenosomini, Atomosiini, Ctenotini, Dasytrichini, Laphriini, Neophoneini ) [2] and about 700 species [1] . The tribe Neophoneini (1st genus) is endemic to the Neotropics, and Ctenotini is found only in the Palaearctic and Afrotropic. The largest tribe Atomosiini includes more than 30 genera [2] .

Phylogeny

The phylogenetic relationships of tribes within the subfamily according to the data of Artigas and Papavero (1991) are shown in the following diagram [3] [4] :
