Mikhail Shlemovich Birman ( January 17, 1928 , Leningrad - July 2, 2009 , St. Petersburg ) - Soviet and Russian mathematician, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor, specialist in the field of mathematical physics and functional analysis. Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation (1999) [1] .

Biography
He graduated with honors from the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of Leningrad University (Leningrad State University) in 1950. Student L. V. Kantorovich. Candidate dissertation “Some applications of the theory of extensions of positive definite operators” (1954), doctoral dissertation “On the spectrum of singular boundary value problems” (1962). From 1956 to 2009 - employee (from 1964 - professor) of the Department of Higher Mathematics and Mathematical Physics, Faculty of Physics, Leningrad State University (St. Petersburg State University). He obtained important results in the mathematical theory of scattering and the spectral theory of operators: the Birman – Schwinger principle, the Kato – Birman theory, the Birman – Kerin formula, and the Birman – Solomyak formula . One of the authors of the theory of Birman - Wishek - Crane. Created a world-class scientific school on the spectral theory of operators. Published over 150 scientific papers. Author of two monographs on operator theory (together with M.Z. Solomyak ).

He was awarded the Leningrad University Prize for the best scientific work (1972), the diploma "For high pedagogical excellence and training of scientific personnel" (1982), and an honorary diploma of the Ministry of Higher Education of the RSFSR (1986). Prize and medal named after P. L. Chebyshev in the field of mathematics and mechanics (Government of St. Petersburg and St. Petersburg Scientific Center, RAS, 2008) [2] .
He taught courses "Higher Algebra", "Linear Operators in Hilbert Space", "Spectral Theory of Differential Operators".

Wife - Tatyana Petrovna Ilyina (1927-2007), mathematician.
