In this discipline, the Americans claimed all three prizes. Two of the strongest American athletes in recent years, Randy Williams and Clarence “Arnie” Robinson, returned to the jumping sector and were the most likely candidates for victory. Their teammate Larry Mirriks was very strong, but in the final during the warm-up he broke his leg and dropped out of the competition. In his first attempt, Robinson showed the best result in his sports carter, jumping 8.35 meters, and this result turned out to be the best. In addition to him, Robinson demonstrated two more jumps (8.26 and 8.16), which could bring him victory. Williams with the result of 8.11 meters in the first attempt remained in second place, and unexpectedly for all, the East German jumper Frank Wartenberg won the bronze medal, who was eighth before the fourth attempt, and jumped 8.02 m in the fourth attempt.
