Description
Large butterfly. The wingspan of the male is up to 95 mm, the female is up to 110 mm [3] . The main background of the upper side of the wings is pinkish-gray. Wings with wide pale brown margins. A light brown wide stripe runs along the outer edge of the wing. The marginal border on the front wings is cut by a white wavy band, which is surrounded by a double dark line curving in its upper third, arcuately curved to the rear edge of the median cell. It approaches almost perpendicular to the trailing edge of the wing. Each wing has a relatively large ocular spot [2] . On the front and hind wings they are wide-rounded, reddish-brown, centered by a narrow transverse black stroke. On the hind wings, the ocular spots are rounded, much larger than on the hind wings, with a narrow white crescent semicircle on the inside. Sexual dimorphism is weakly expressed: females are larger than males, antennae of males are comb-shaped [2] .
Range
This species is found on the territory of Russia in the Chita , Amur Region , Jewish Autonomous Okrug , the south of the Khabarovsk Territory (in the north-east to the Ulchi district (Kiselevka), the Lidoga-Vanino highway; along the coast - to the north to the Botchinsky Reserve ), Primorsky Territory , on the island Sakhalin , Kuril Islands . Biology
Develops in one generation. The flight time is the end of August - the beginning of October. It occurs in forest glades and edges, in light forests, among shrubs. Daily activity in females from 23:00 to 01:50, in males from 00:20 to 02:40. In the vicinity of Khabarovsk, an active arrival of males to the light was observed in the predawn time. Butterflies do not feed ( aphagia ) and live off the reserves of nutrients accumulated at the caterpillar stage [3] [1] .
Life Cycle
The caterpillar is large, at the last age reaches a length of up to 7.5 cm. Its color is green. On the first two segments of the body are well-defined warts of a light green color. On the remaining segments of the bodies are only two bundles of hairs. On the sides of the body there are one pair of obliquely passing light yellow or whitish stripes. Caterpillars feed on various deciduous tree species: feeding on alder [3] , linden [3] , sea ββbuckthorn [3] , fruit rosaceous [3] , Amur velvet [2] , Manchurian walnut [2] is noted. The pupa is dark brown, up to 2.8 cm long. Located in a light cocoon. Eggs hibernate [3] .
