History
After the fall of Singapore in February 1942, the Japanese attacked the Dutch East Indies and occupied it by March 9, 1942. In February of the same year, Portuguese Timor was occupied. For use in the occupied territories in 1942, banknotes were issued with denominations in cents and guilders with inscriptions in Dutch. The two-digit series of these notes began with the letter "S" (Shonan - bright, beautiful south).
In 1944, taking into account the anti-Holland sentiment of the population, the production of banknotes in rupees with the text in the Indonesian language was started.
In 1945, with the restoration of the Portuguese administration of Portuguese Timor, the release of Timorese pataca was resumed. On the territory of the Netherlands India, occupation guilders and rupees were withdrawn from circulation and exchanged for the guilder of the Netherlands India in 1946 at a ratio of 100: 3 [1] .
