Reina, Casiodoro de

Neither the date nor the place of birth of Casiodoro de Reina are known for certain, according to one version ^[1] - he was born in the town of Montemolin in the Spanish province of Badajoz around 1520. It is known that he was a monk in the Jerome Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo in Santiponce . This monastery was known for its Protestant moods - many novices of the monastery were Lutherans - which incurred the wrath of the Inquisition . Around 1557, Reina fled the country - wandered around Europe for a while, eventually settling in London . With the blessing of Elizabeth I began to preach to the Protestant Spaniards. However, he was soon accused of sodomy and left London. During this period, the translation of the Bible into Spanish begins. In 1562, the Inquisition places his work in the index of banned books , and declares their author a heretic . In 1569, he lived for some time in Basel, where the first edition of his translation was published. After that, he moved to Frankfurt . In 1573 he published his commentaries on the Gospels of John and Matthew . In 1577 he published the book “The Creed” written by him in London.

Work on the translation took 12 years and was first published in Basel in 1569 with a total circulation of 2600 copies. The Old Testament was translated from Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, and the New Testament from Latin and Greek. Despite the fact that the Bear Bible ( Spanish: La Biblia del Oso ) is considered Protestant, controversial subjects (Wisdom, Ecclesiastes, etc.) are given in a Catholic interpretation. Despite this, the Catholic Church called the translation of the Reina "the most dangerous edition of the Bible."
