Habitat and habitat

It grows in temperate regions of eastern North America from Georgia and Alabama to Newfoundland and southern Ontario . Grows in humid or dry forests in the hills . Often found in silt and water.

Botanical Description

Flower

Ephemeroid perennial herbaceous bulbous plant 10–18 (rarely up to 30) cm high.

Leaves are 8-23 cm long, elliptically lanceolate.

Single flowers . Perianth is simple. Perianth 20–33 mm long, yellow, the upper surface covered with specks of brown or purple.

Flowering from April to May .

Economic Significance and Application

It is used as an ornamental plant in rocky gardens and other plantings.

The boiled leaves of American Kandyka can be eaten. Its bulbs are also edible.

Leaves can be applied to ulcers and swollen areas for quick healing. Natives use American Kandyk as an antibiotic or pain medication .
