Biography
Born in the city of Nicholsburg (now Mikulov , Czech Republic ) in the territory of Moravia . After receiving a law degree, he occupied the post of Secretary of the President of the National Assembly before Austria joined the Third Reich . Member of the Social Democratic Party of Austria. In 1933-1934, a member of the Austrian Federal Council . In 1934, as well as in 1938 and 1944, he was arrested for political reasons. After the war, becomes chairman of the Socialist Party of Austria. In 1955, he took part in the Soviet-Austrian negotiations on the neutralization of Austria. From 1957 until his death he was the Federal President of Austria.
In 1964 , during the presidency of A. Scherf, Austria hosted the IX Winter Olympic Games, which were held in the city of Innsbruck . At the same time, he opened these games .
