Monument in Ponta Delgada.
The son of Fernand Velho, the Alcalde Veleda, and Maria Alvarez Cabral. Commander of the Order of Christ, captain in the service of the Infant Heinrich the Navigator .
On instructions from the infant, in 1432 he set off on a journey to establish the exact location of the islands of Santa Maria and San Miguel , discovered by Diogo di Silves. Successfully completed the task, becoming the "second" discoverer of the Azores . On the way back he discovered the cliffs of Formigash .
During the journey of 1444-1446, he discovered six more islands of the Azores archipelago.
For his achievements he received the possession of land on the Azores.
