Perennial herb , up to 10-30 cm tall. Rhizome creeping. Leaves narrowly linear, 1-1.5 mm wide.
Inflorescence is a reddish-brown ear . The fruit is an obovate nutlet .
Flowering in July and August.
In Russia , a number of local farms of this type of figure is known in the Leningrad and Novgorod regions , in the Republic of Karelia . Outside Russia is found in the south of Scandinavia , in South and Atlantic Europe , in the east of North America .

Rare view. It is dying out due to land reclamation in areas of growth, as well as due to competition with the white outgrowth ( Rhynchospora alba ). It is listed in the Red Books of Russia , Karelia, Novgorod and Leningrad Region. Abroad protected in Lithuania , Latvia , Estonia .
