Michael Jude Gogulski ( born Michael Jude Gogulski , known as Mike Gogulski , born August 8, 1972 ) is a political activist and freelance translator who renounced US citizenship . He is one of the few US citizens known for voluntarily becoming stateless after renouncing their citizenship (the other is Harry Davis, founder of the World Service Authority ). [one]

Youth
Gogulsky's ancestors emigrated to the United States in the 19th century, on the paternal side they come from the vicinity of Poznan ( Poland ), and on the maternal side from Germany . Gogulsky was born in Phoenix , Arizona , but shortly thereafter, due to the work of his father, an electrical engineer , his family moved to Orlando , Florida . He has a younger sister, Karen. Gogulsky entered the University of Orlando in 1990 to study computer science , but lost interest and stopped his studies, however, he has ten years of experience as a system administrator . [2]
Gogulsky's father died in 2001 . In 2004, Gogulsky left the United States to teach English in Eastern Europe . In the end, he ended up in Bratislava ( Slovakia ), where he works as a translator, proofreader and editor . [2]
Renunciation of citizenship
Gogulsky renounced citizenship in December 2008 , although the Federal Register did not publish his name (as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ), which amended Section 6039G of the United States Tax Code to make such a publication ) until February 2011. [3] At that moment, he lived in Slovakia. Gogulsky said that he renounced his citizenship in order to break with the system, which he considers the source of many injustices in the world. The Slovak authorities issued him a stateless person certificate. Thus, in order to visit his mother, he needs a US visa, but Gogulsky himself believes that he will not be able to get it. He claims that he has the right to apply for Slovakian citizenship, but prefers to remain stateless. [one]
Political Activism
Gogulsky is the founder of the Chelsea Manning Support Network , which organizes protests in support of U.S. Army soldier Chelsea Manning , who is accused of transferring classified documents to WikiLeaks , and has raised $ 50,000 to ensure her legal protection. [4] [5]
