The project “Great Apes” is an international non-profit organization founded in 1994, which includes anthropologists , ethologists , primatologists and other specialists who support the UN declaration on the rights of large apes . The Declaration gives the great apes ( chimpanzees , bonobos (miniature chimpanzees), gorillas , orangutans ) basic legal rights: the right to life, personal freedom and protection from torture. The organization also collects information about large monkeys in the United States.
When these rights of great apes are legally established, the organization intends to demand the release of all large monkeys in captivity. Currently [ clarify ] in the United States in captivity contains about 3,100 apes, of which 1280 are subjected to various biomedical research.

Edited by the philosophers Paola Cavalieri and Peter Singer , the book “The Project of Great Apes” was published, in which 34 authors took part, including such famous scientists as Jane Goodall and Richard Dawkins . The authors of the articles placed in the book express support for the project.
