Biography

Born in Nanyang . The governor of Jingzhou province (which then included Nanyang County), Liu Biao instructed Huang Zhong to defend Changsha County with his nephew Liu Pan. When Liu Biao passed away in 208, the son of Liu Tsong , who inherited him, surrendered to Cao Cao , but many of the governors of the districts did not agree with this decision and refused to comply, becoming virtually independent rulers. Han Xuan began to rule Changsha, and Huang Zhong began to serve under his command. After Cao Cao was defeated at the Battle of the Red Cliff and forced to retreat north, the combined forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei took control of the southern part of Jingzhou province, including Changsha County. Huang Zhong invited Han Xuan to go to serve with Liu Bei, and he agreed.

When Liu Bei went to conquer Yizhou Province in 212-214, Huang Zhong proved himself a brave and courageous warrior, and received the title of “commander of the overwhelming rebels” (討 虜 將軍). In 217, Liu Bei began fighting in Hanzhong , but troops under the command of Xiahou Yuan blocked the Yangping Pass. The confrontation lasted more than a year, until in 219 in the battle of Mount Dintszyunshan, the army of Xiahou Yuan was defeated, and he himself did not die in battle. For the actions in this battle, Huang Zhong received the title of “Attacking Commander in the West” (征西 將軍). Having taken possession of Hanzhong, Liu Bei proclaimed himself the Hanzhong prince (漢中王), and wanted to give Huang Zhong the title of “rearguard commander” (後 將軍), putting him on the same level with Guan Yu , Zhang Fei and Ma Chao , but Zhuge Liang became dissuade him, arguing that this could cause dissatisfaction with other generals. However, Liu Bei acted in his own way, and put all four generals on the same level. Huang Zhong also received the title “Guanneihou” (關內侯).

Huang Zhong passed away in 220; the cause of his death is not mentioned in the sources. He was posthumously awarded the title of Gan Hou (剛 侯). His son, Huang Xu, died young, so he did not have any descendants.

Chen Shu, who wrote the biography of Huang Zhong in Sang-go-ji , described it like this: "Huang Zhong and Zhao Yun were both powerful warriors, relating to each other like claws and fangs."
